Speaking About Sex and Aging.
Sexuality is often overlooked as a topic in the training of staff who work with older adults. Yet research has shown that older adults are being sexual, staying sexual, and considering themselves sexual beings up into their 70s and 80s as longevity increases.
As a professional with expertise in the sexual well-being of older adults in senior living communities, I can help leaders meet training and organizational goals to create an environment of joy, compassion, and inclusion for residents and staff.
I’m an award-winning sexuality professional with a PhD in Human Sexuality from the Widener University Center for Human Sexuality Studies. I conduct research, teach classes, and write articles. I also consult with large and small senior living communities to guide them in transforming their overall approach to wellness.
In the past few years, I’ve:
Co-Chaired large national conferences (AASECT and Sexuality and Aging Consortium)
Discovered a new model on sexuality and aging with same-sex adults and published my research results in a prestigious academic journal
Trained hundreds of concerned adults in senior living communities
Presented my first TEDx Talk
Co-hosted a bi-monthly podcast, Our Better Half, with Dr. Ashley Mader
Hosted a monthly radio show, Sex Matters, on WHMP/WRSI with Bill Newman and Monte Belmonte
Contributed as a blogger to AgeRight.org
Received the William R. Stayton Award for leadership in sexuality education from the Widener University Center for Human Sexuality Studies
I’m on a mission
I started working in the area of sexuality education as a second career when I retired from a very successful 3 decades in the public sector as an organizational development and training consultant to a large mental health system. For my second career, I wanted to make one more difference in the world. I didn’t want to sit back and wait.
I’m on a mission to promote sexual well-being to older adults in senior living communities -- whether it is an assisted living, independent living, rest home, nursing home, senior center, council on aging, or other community focused on older adults – and to the leadership and staff who work from their hearts to make seniors' lives better.
I’m hoping to accomplish even more with the balance of extraordinary patience and indisputable compassion. My background in organizational change can help your organization grow and become a leader in this important field.
Want to get a sense of the way I work with people? How I approach these topics with ferocious seriousness along with lighthearted humor? Take a look at a clip from my TEDx Talk, “Is it OK for grandma to have sex?”
We were very pleased with the presentation Dr. Jane Fleishman gave to our staff. It is clear that staff have been able to apply it to their work. We definitely will call on her again in the future."
